TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) is a pain-relieving technique that employs a low-voltage electrical current. A TENS unit is a battery-operated gadget that sends electrical impulses to the surface of your skin using electrodes. The electrodes are put on or near nerves or trigger sites where the pain is present.
Mechanism of TENS
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is thought to act in two ways.
According to one idea, the electric current activates nerve cells, which then inhibits the passage of pain signals, altering your pain experience. Another notion is that nerve stimulation increases endorphin levels, which are the body’s natural painkillers. The endorphins then work to inhibit pain perception.
It has been used or is being studied to relieve both chronic (long-lasting) and acute (short-term) pain. Some of the most common conditions for which TENS has been used include:
Osteoarthritis (disease of the joints).
Fibromyalgia (aching and pain in muscles, tendons, and joints all over the body, especially along the spine.
Tendinitis (an inflammation or irritation of a tendon).
Bursitis (inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion joints).
Diabetic neuropathy (damage to the nerves that connect the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body).
Peripheral artery disease (“hardening of the arteries” that circulate blood to the body).
